The Foundation offers one-week sessions for younger campers, two-week sessions for older campers, and weekend length family camps on its 72 wooded acres in Stillwater, NJ. The camp has a seven acre lake, archery range, craft center, Health Center, basketball and volleyball courts, Olympic sized swimming pool, 10 camper cabins, a recreation barn, low-ropes course, playground, activity field, and hiking and biking trails. Campers live in rustic cabins and dine in a modern dining hall. Camp Nejeda is accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA) and fully licensed by the New Jersey Dept of Health. The Camp Nejeda Foundation is an affiliate of the Diabetes Education Camping Association.
Summer Camp Program: Camp Nejeda offers all the activities you would expect to find at any sleep-away camp (partial listing above), but the Nejeda experience also provides formal and informal educational opportunities for campers to learn how to better manage their diabetes, make healthy food choices, and maintain a good attitude.
All insulin, needles, blood glucose meters and related supplies are provided by the camp. At this time pump supplies (other than insulin) must be provided by the campers. For safety reasons all insulin is administered by, or under the supervision of, our health team.
Family Camp Program: Camp Nejeda's Family Camp programs recognize that managing a child's diabetes can be challenging for the entire family. Family Camps provide an informational and recreational mini vacation for parents, siblings, and children with diabetes who are too young to attend the summer camp program and also provide a nice introduction to the camp experience for those unfamiliar with it. Camp Nejeda's family camps offer the opportunity to meet other families dealing with the same issues, celebrate, commiserate and share solutions. Besides family friendly activities break-out rap sessions are held just for parents, kids and siblings.
Short & Sweet: a one-day retreat for adults with diabetes: Presented in partnership with Newton Memorial Hospital, this one day retreat will provide adults with diabetes with an opportunity to brush up on their management skills and learn about the latest in diabetes self management.
Insulin Pumps at Camp: About half of our campers are using insulin pumps to help manage their diabetes. Many of our Health Center Staff are Certified Diabetes Educators and many are trained in the skills associated with Insulin Pump use. The Camp Nejeda Foundation is working with the Turrell Fund to train more nurses in these skills. Infusion sites are changed every two days at camp and all supplies other than insulin must be provided by the camper.
Food at Camp: The Nejeda experience is about fun and education. We don't feed our campers processed gruel containing a certain amount of calories per bowl. They are served flavorful meals of freshly prepared foods and taught how to count 'carbs' and make food choice decisions…just like in real life! The camp employs a Registered Dietitian to assist our kitchen staff with meal planning and to provide nutritional education to campers.
